San Francisco – Apr 23 2016

(SEE TICKETS AT THE BOTTOM)

The 13th Annual Orange Kingsday party has arrived in the Bay Area!

This year we are going to go back to the Old Amsterdam Kingsnight with traditional Dutch music in a “Bruin” (Brown) Cafe on the famous French Belden Lane Alley that will be Dutch for a night. So as the cafe will be deocrated in it’s traditional orange festive King’s Night look, the alley will be perfect to get away from the blasting Dutch tunes and enjoy the delightful street with a cocktail in your hand.

Yes one of the most favorite activities for Dutch People is to sit/stand (we will remove most of the tables) on a terrace and watch other people! So be part of the lookers with a glass of wine in hand and enjoy this immense Dutch tradition!

DJ Marc van Brabant will be your host and DJ . He will play some fun Dutch Tunes and as the night progresses he will mix in some 80’s and the best beats from contemporary DJ’s such as showtek, dannic, hardwell, tiesto, and sunnery james. As always he will bring the Dutch and classic songs to make you sing along and truly have a fun orange festival experience!

The space is limited, so buy your tickets beforehand as one we run out we run out (op is op) You don’t have to be Dutch to enjoy this Orange Party but does help to understand the Dutch Way of dancing with one beer in your hand and the other making some form of a windmill and jumping up and down in a 15 cm2 area as Dutch are also limited to territorial confinement and overcrowding on the dance floor. But lucky this will not happen as we keep the ticket count limited to observe this crazy fun gezellig party for the king of the Netherlands.

At the door it will be $20
Right now tickets online are only $7.50 as we need to forfill a bar guarantee. As soon as we have enough people the price will double!

Here is the link for tickets:

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Eurovision Song Contest ( Concours Eurovision de la chanson) ,often shortened to ESC or Eurovision, is the longest-running annual international TV song competition, held primarily, among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956.

It is fair to share that winning the Eurovision Song Contest provides a short-term boost to the winning artists’ career, but rarely results in long-term success. Great exceptions are ABBA , Bucks Fizz  and Céline Dion (YES), all of whom launched successful worldwide careers after their wins. Many of you may not recognize Bucks Fizz (UK) but I doubt there are many people who do not know the name Abba or Celine Dion.

The 2016 Eurovision Song Contest will be held at the Globe Arena in Stockholm. The Semi-Finals will be held on 10th and 12th May, the Grand Final will take place on Saturday 14th May. All shows will be broadcast at 21:00 CEST.  Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede will be your hosts during the two Semi-Finals and Grand Final.

Marisol Monasterio’s Love for Flamenco & Tango Keeps Her Busy in Houston

Please introduce yourself

My name is Marisol Monasterio.  I came from Caracas, Venezuela when I was 16 years old to start college with a swimming scholarship from University of Houston.  Later I attended Texas Woman’s University to get a Master degree in Occupational Therapy and specialized in Hand Therapy.  I have been very involved with the American Society of Hand Therapy and the Texas Society of Hand Therapists for many years. I work in a private clinic by Spring Cypress helping and assisting orthopedic patients to be independent again.

How did you end up in the art field?

When I was finishing my fourth swimming varsity year, I decided to join the Colombian Folkloric Ballet in order to stay active and start a more artistic path. Dancing was not my specialty at all, but with time it kept growing on me and getting better at it. I also did a few years of Argentinean Tango dancing.

So why Flamenco?

Since I was a little girl, I was mesmerized by Flamenco, but it was a very expensive activity for me to follow.  When I started working and making my own money, I decided that it was time to take some classes, plus I was motivated by one of my dance teachers that told me that I had the “porte” or the style for it. I started taking dance classes in Houston, and later I was asked to start singing because of the roughness of my voice.  I studied cante (singing) locally with Kina Mendez, Javier Heredia, Juan Bacan and Isai Chacon, as well as in Granada Spain with Sergio “el Colorao” Gomez.

What have been your merits?

I recorded as a vocalist in Amin Safari’s CD “Pasion de la Guitarra”, I have been honored by the Houston Press with an article as one the 100 Creatives 2012 due to my unusual voice and emotional performance, I have performed in many “Tablaos” in Houston and San Antonio as well as having the pleasure of representing Hierro Forjado flamenco dance troupe in several theatrical performances, but my biggest merit was to direct the show Caminos Gitanos in 2015. (https://youtu.be/M63B2QeWdS8)

What is your most immediate project?

Hierro Forjado’s Director and Dancer, Alexandra Simmons, presents her newest production: NuevosHorizontes (New Horizons), featuring HF’s Performing Troupe and a display of Houston’s most recognized flamenco artists: Lucía and Valdemar, Marisol Monasterio and Martin Rodríguez, Laura Siebert, and Bianca Antonia. Don’t miss this fabulous flamenco concert and performance. It will be held at the beautiful Queensbury Theatre by City Centre (12777 Queensbury) at 7:15 pm on May 14th.

In this show we will take you from the most delicate and delightful representation of Flamenco such as Guajiras and Alegrias, to the earthy and emotional Tientos/Tangos and Bulerias.  Each soloist will express their deepest feelings only seen in Flamenco Hondo, and the Cantaoras (singers) and musicians will transport you to another level with their sensitivity.  I have the great honor to interpret the cante (singing) for the troupe, dance with them and paid a tribute to my biggest inspiration in flamenco, Lola Flores.

What is the essence of Houston to you?

their cultural variety that makes us so unique and gives us the opportunity to learn from each other.

I have found that through art, we have been able to connect lives and people’s backgrounds.  Houston is a wonderful city to explore and to find what makes you special.

Urban dictionary defines IVY as
“A beautiful vine of strong, vibrant leaves that adds lushness to any garden. It climbs to amazing heights and has been called “clinging” but really it is loyal and true.
It can also be a woman’s name and usually indicates a strong woman! She is calm, thoughtful, kind and very artistic.
She can be shy but when she shows her true self she shines brightly. Ivy also has a wild side which includes her passion and deep loyalty.
Ivy is very sensual but is careful who she shares this with. She is the one you want to be your best friend forever.”
