THE PLAY…

Relentlessly daring playwright Wallace Shawn returns to The New Group to continue his vibrant collaboration with Scott Elliott (Aunt Dan and Lemon, The Fever, Threepenny Opera). This comedic masterpiece of marital strife recounts the day that Marie (Marisa Tomei) finally resolves to tell her charming and impossibly positive husband Bruce (Frank Whaley) that she’s had enough.

“Each of us is granted at birth the wonderful gift of consciousness– we can think, we feel, and we try to understand things. But there’s too much going on, we are horribly confused, and in our confusion we seek greater clarity by forming a bond with another human being. The search for understanding continues, but it’s even more complicated.”
– Wallace Shawn

Jones, Cindy Katz, Devin Ratray, Alok Tewari, Adam Trese, and Alison Wright., with sets designed by Tony award winning designer, Derek McLane (Harvard BA, Yale MFA)

A Reception, combining recent visual art and poetry of Stefano Losi, is planned on Thursday, March 3rd, 6pm at the United Nations in New York (Ex-Press Bar, General Assembly Building – First Avenue and 46th Street), presented by the UNSRC Circolo Culturale Italiano and the Literary Cultural Circle of the United Nations, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of New York.

“Violent Dances Fade”, the art project of the author, started in Milan in the early 1990s, was further developed in London and is currently active in New York, combining classical yet extremely powerful human figures and intense poetry. Three books collecting visual arts and epigrams, presenting an overview of the artistic work in the respective creative periods, were published in 1996, 2001 and 2010. The most recent volume, titled “Under the Burnt Walls”, includes a foreword by Antonio Maria Costa (Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations), and was presented at the 2010 edition of BookExpo America.
In his foreword, Mr. Costa said: “This is a “splendid union”. Poetry as universal value that is born from the heart of an Organisation that, in itself, is global: the United Nations. […] In the words of these poems there is the same hope I cherish when I observe the world in my trips and my meetings. Stefano has revisited with mastery antique poetic rhythms in a contemporary perspective. Words that describe universal feelings as love, hate, passion, sorrow in a context of hope that brings us together.”

After a series of events organized in Europe and the United States since the 1990s, including several shows and poetry readings in formal and alternative spaces, in March 2011 the author presents a Solo Exhibition of paintings and poems at the United Nations in New York.
