Pop and Rock

Did you know that relative to the size of its population, Sweden ranks third in the world after the US and the UK as a music-exporting nation.

From ABBA to Neneh Cherry to the Cardigans to the Hives, Swedish pop artists have a long history of international success and continue to seduce audiences around the world. Some Swedes making recent pop headlines include Dungen, The Knife, The Sounds, The Ark, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Sahara Hotnights, The Concretes, Robyn, Jens Lekman, José Gonzalez, Love Is All, Vapnet, El Perro del Mar, Teddybears, Marit Bergman, I’m From Barcelona and Loney, Dear.

Norway had Aha…Iceland has Bjork, Denmark…hmm, we don’t know, Finland (Lordi won EuroVision song contest) doesn’t really do too well in this area. Her success is more with today’s great opera singers like Karita Mattila and conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Sweden: The Nobel Prize in Literature, playwright August Strindberg, and children’s author Astrid Lindgren have all contributed to a vibrant literary legacy in Sweden, one which continues to grow and evolve

Finland: Mika Waltari – Sinuhe
Norway: The dramatist Henrik Wergeland was the most influential author of the 19th century while the later works of Henrik Ibsen were to earn Norway an influential place in Western European literature. In the 20th century notable Norwegian writers include the two Nobel Prize winning authors Knut Hamsun and Sigrid Undset.

Denmark: Danish literature is the subset of Scandinavian literature composed in Denmark or by Danish people. Its history stretches from the Middle Ages into modern times and includes authors such as Saxo Grammaticus, Søren Kierkegaard, Hans Christian Andersen and Karen Blixen.

Iceland: In the early twentieth century, many writers started to write in Danish, among them even some really noteworthy, like Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975), one of the best-known and most translated Icelandic authors, considered a master in characterisation. However, the best-known Icelandic author is Halldór Laxness (1902-98), winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955, author of several articles, essays, poems, short stories and novels, like the best known Expressionist works Independent People, Salka Valka and Iceland’s Bell.

Dance performance:
By Reina Igarashi and her friends Leah, Sandra and Gene (probably around 8:30 pm)

The SEXIEST MAN will be rewarded. The judges will be Monica, Veronica …

The first meaning is to denote dances originated in Latin America. Typically these are Cha cha, Rumba, Samba, Salsa, Mambo, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia, Bolero. Some dance instructors also include Tango and Argentine Tango in this list, although these differ from the rest in their style

Aquarians basically possess strong and attractive personalities. They fall into two principle types: one shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the other exuberant, lively and exhibitionist, sometimes hiding the considerable depths of their character under a cloak of frivolity. Both types are strong willed and forceful in their different ways and have strong convictions, though as they seek truth above all things, they are usually honest enough to change their opinions, however firmly held, if evidence comes to light which persuades them that they have been mistaken. They have a breadth of vision that brings diverse factors into a whole, and can see both sides of an argument without shilly-shallying as to which side to take. Consequently they are unprejudiced and tolerant of other points of view. This is because they can see the validity of the argument, even if they do not accept it themselves. They obey the Quaker exhortation to “Be open to truth, from whatever source it comes,” and are prepared to learn from everyone.

Both types are humane, frank, serious minded, genial, refined, sometimes ethereal, and idealistic, though this last quality is tempered with a sensible practicality. They are quick, active and persevering without being self-assertive, and express themselves with reason, moderation and sometimes, a dry humor.

They are nearly always intelligent, concise, clear and logical. Many are strongly imaginative and psychically intuitive, so that the Age of Aquarius, which is about to begin, is much anticipated by psychic circles as an age in which mankind will experience a great spiritual awakening. The Aquarian philosophical and spiritual bent may be dangerous in that it can drive the subjects into an ivory-tower existence where they meditate on abstractions that bear little relevance to life. On the other hand it can help the many who have scientific leanings to combine these with the Aquarian yearning for the universal recognition of the brotherhood of man, and to embark on scientific research to fulfill their philanthropic ideals of benefiting mankind. When some cause or work of this nature inspires them, they are capable of such devotion to it that they may drive themselves to the point of exhaustion and even risk injuring their health.

Both types need to retire from the world at times and to become temporary loners. They appreciate opportunities for meditation or, if they are religious, of retreats. Even in company they are fiercely independent, refusing to follow the crowd. They dislike interference by others, however helpfully intended, and will accept it only on their own terms. Normally they have good taste in drama, music and art, and are also gifted in the arts, especially
