The Lives of Others- This is the feature film debut of writer and director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, in which he tells the story of Stasi Agent Wiesler (of East Germany’s secret police) who is monitoring the cultural scene of East Berlin. Film director Donnersmarck’s parents were both from East Germany, and the director has described that on visits there as a child before the Berlin Wall fell, he could sense the fear they had as subjects of the State. Based on those experiences, Donnersmarck envisioned a story “of a person sitting in a depres- sing room with earphones on his head and listening in to what he supposes is the enemy of the State and the enemy of his ideas, and what he is really hear- ing is beautiful music that touches him.” His resulting film “The Lives of Others” won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (2006, 98min) German with English Subtitles
