Ukrainian Institute of America - Oleksiy Lytvynenko: Silence March 23 – April 22, 2018

Oleksiy Lytvynenko: Silence
March 23 – April 22, 2018 Reception for the artist: Friday, March 23 from 6:00–8:00 PM
Please RSVP to attend. Art at the Institute is pleased to present Silence, an exhibition of paintings by Ukrainian artist Oleksiy Lytvynenko. Curated by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, director of Art at the Institute, this is the artist’s first solo exhibition with The Ukrainian Institute of America. Mr. Lytvyneko will be present at the reception to discuss his work. Lytvynenko’s ethereal paintings combine organic representational elements with abstracted backgrounds in a way that is both decorative and modernist. His motifs include landscape, water, plants, insects, fish, and amphibians. He is not interested in a realistic representation of an object but in interpreting its spirit; these paintings exalt anthropocentric personality. The artist sees the human (himself) as an integral part of nature. The affinity between man and nature is what impresses him most, rather than their contrast. He suggests by the simplest possible means the inherent nature of the aesthetic object. He understands his duty as an artist to suggest the essence, the eternal qualities of that object, which is in itself a work of natural art before he arrives. This search for spiritual transcendence continually influences his creative vision. He durably expresses our relationships with one another, with the natural world and with the infinite. Pulling cues from Western and Eastern schools of philosophy, Lytvynenko seeks to make works that are objects of contemplation. Having undergone a process of creation, destruction and finally preservation, the stillness of meditation is echoed in the quietude of the finished paintings. Plants and creatures that transform are arranged to symbolize the enduring pattern of regeneration. The results are both curious and sublime. Delicately nurtured by knowing hands, Lytvynenko’s use of subtle color harmonies and fluid drawing mark his belief in the importance of beauty in our lives. His subjects are used as links between the viewer and the artist’s feelings. And, the artist’s technique is used to create an illusion of the forms of reality. The eye can wander, and the mind can think unencumbered through visual realms that are expansively and emotionally rich — the sincere and unabashed offering of pleasure and solace. Oleksiy Lytvynenko’s work has been exhibited extensively in Ukraine, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. He studied at Kyiv State Arts Institute and is a member of the Ukrainian Artists Union. He lives and works in Kyiv. PRESS RELEASE Exhibition hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 – 6:00 PM or by appointment.

Ukrainian Institute of American - Five Elements of War | Jan. 25 - Feb. 4, 2018

Daria Marchenko and Daniel Green: Five Elements of War

January 25 – February 4, 2018
Opening reception and artist presentation: Thursday, January 25, from 6:00 – 8:00PM

Please RSVP to attend

The Ukrainian Institute of America
2 East 79th Street, NYC 10075

Art at the Institute cordially invites you to attend the reception and presentation celebrating Five Elements of War, a dramatic installation of five multimedia artworks by Ukrainian artist-activists Daria Marchenko and Daniel Green on Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The artists will be present that evening to talk about the works on display reflecting their critical commentary on and reaction to the recognized causes, turmoil and consequences of the ongoing Russian military aggression and war waged in eastern Ukraine.

While the installation’s artworks are clearly political, most compelling is their material nature. The artists incorporate found objects including shell casings, documents and shrapnel, all gathered from the war’s front lines. They emerge as “metaphysical images,” meant to evoke a visceral — in your face — unrepeatable and purely original reaction in the viewer.

The exhibition’s iconic piece, the seven-foot high “The Face of War” (2015), unapologetically depicts the figure behind the calculated conflict in Ukraine — Russian president Vladimir Putin. It is cleverly created out of five thousand bullet casings gathered at the battlefront in Donbas. Depending on the play of light in the exhibition space, the “mood” of the piece changes. The “portrait” unveils a wide spectrum of emotions, from emphasizing developing socio-political complexities, Russian propaganda and lies generated of the conflict, to generalities of human nature in the time of war.

Daria Marchenko hails from Kyiv, Ukraine, where she attended and graduated from the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design. Her artworks have been exhibited in Ukraine, Western Europe and the Middle East. A successful commercial artist, Ms. Marchenko is most known for her involvement as an advocate for public art in Ukraine, and the creation of both interior and exterior wall murals in over thirty countries.

Daniel Green is a Ukraine-born painter, sculptor, and installation artist. He is a graduate of the Kyiv State Secondary Art School of Painting, and a member of the Professional Union of Artists of Ukraine. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad.

Underwritten and presented by Raymond F. Staples, Esq., Five Elements of War was arranged and organized for display at The Ukrainian Institute of America by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, director of Art at the Institute.

Exhibition hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 – 6:00 PM, or by appointment.

The Ukrainian Institute of America thanks Raymond F. Staples, Esq., Self-Reliance NY Federal Credit Union and JRS Management Co. for their generous support in making this exhibition possible.

Life in the Arctic Circle with Kirsty Halliday

I have always admired people who take freedom to a whole other level. The older I get, the more I dream of leaving everything behind to wander the world aimlessly. Years ago, my favorite gypsy Kirsty Halliday did just that. She left her corporate job in Philly, for what she thought was a summer road trip in an RV. I watched her explore those parts of North America I always dreamed of seeing, like Yellowstone, Alaska, and then further and further into what I thought of as uninhabitable parts of the country. I kept asking her, When are you coming home? but it has been 4 years since I last saw her, and she “has no interest in being a regular person” again. She recently took a job in the Arctic circle, to fulfill her dream of seeing the Northern Lights, where she is working in the hospitality industry hosting tourists during their brief stays. Her first guests were Neil and Lauro Eckland, the crew from the Discovery Channel. They are filming a documentary of a team of U.S. Army veterans who will ride motorcycles from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America, crossing the infamous Darien Gap in the process. Oleh Denysenko: Etchings | Opening Night | Nov 10

Oleh Denysenko: Etchings November 10 – 29, 2017
Reception for the artist: Friday, November 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM 2 East 79th Street, New York, NY 10075
Please RSVP to attend.   Art at the Institute is delighted to present a special exhibition of forty original prints by Leopolitan artist Oleh Denysenko, introducing recent works and archetypal selections from his graphic oeuvre of the past decade. Curated by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, this exhibition marks the artist’s first return to The Ukrainian Institute of America since his 2003 solo showing. An innovative and prolific artist practiced in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, calligraphy, and book illustration, Mr. Denysenko is most recognized, internationally, for his intricate etchings on paper. An astoundingly inventive draftsman, due in part to years of studying the moralizing art of Northern European masters such as Bosch, Bruegel, Cranach and Dürer, among others, Denysenko developed a highly original framework and spatial base around which an alchemy of fantastical and metaphorical character narratives flourish—ultimately, suggesting both weight and whimsy. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Oleh Denysenko concentrated in graphics while studying at the National Academy of Printing (Lviv). He holds over thirty international honors for intaglio printmaking, including Grand Prize of the 9th Mondial Triennale for Small Prints (2014) in Chamalieres, France. He is an active member of the Union of Ukrainian Artists and is a full member of the Academic Senate of the International Academy of Modern Art (Rome). Mr. Denysenko lives and works in Lviv. Read Press Release Exhibition hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 – 6:00 PM, or by appointment.
