Criteria what is EASTERN European…we simplified the process by using East vs. West.

EXPERIENCE BELLYDANCING BY VALERIA
There have been many theories about the origin of belly dancing, but most evidence links it to the Middle East and Africa. Some say it was originated by the Phoenicians; others claim that it was introduced into Egypt by the Turks. Egyptian tomb paintings dating from as far back as the fourteenth century BC depict partially clad dancers whose callisthenic positions appear to be very similar to those used in belly dancing.

Tonight – since we are spolighting TURKEY this month and on April 1 have our TURKISH NIGHT – you will have a little taste of Turkey by VALERIA, who will perform also on April 1. The danse du ventre (literally belly dance) of Turkish origin was introduced to Paris by Turkish women. They exhibited it in Midway Plaisance of the Colombian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and then at the California Midwinter Exposition in San Francisco. As performed by Turkish women the dance consists of control and movement of the abdominal and chest muscles; hence its other name ‘muscle dance’. Varied with graceful steps and gyrations, cymbals an scarves, it was performed solo, accompanied by male Turkish musicians with Turkish instruments.

Gavroche is a French country restaurant in the city, with a rustic, down to earth atmosphere. It is named after Gavroche, the “gamin de Paris” in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, a character who holds a special place in the heart of owner Camelia Cassin. The chef has created a menu that brings ‘cuisine de terroir’, the traditional specialties of the French country side, to New York city. Typical French country fare, listing under the heading “tradition”, is side by side with his creative take on classics, titled “a ma facon”, which means “my way”.

Gavroche is one of the few restaurants on this strip that are open for lunch, so when you get the urge for some hearty, home-style cuisine a la Francaise, stop by for a plate of coq au vin or steak frites. These traditional French bistro dishes are available at dinner too, along with free-range roasted chicken, duck terrine and braised lamb shanks. Names for the street urchin in Les Miserables, Gavroche owes its 2004 opening to manager Camelia Cassin. A French- country ambience pervades the small dining room, its bistro tables covered with blue-and-white-checked linen towels. In back, the garden terrace accommodates additional diners in warm weather.

Three courses Menu:

Appetizers – Choose 1:
Soupe du Jour or
Country Duck Terrine with Cornichons or

Entrees – Choose 1:
