Algerian worldbeat artist Rachid Taha creates a musical melting pot in Perelman Theater on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 7:30pm, incorporating everything from traditional Arab zithers to modern electric guitars. A former member of the hit French rock trio Carte de Séjour, Taha mixes Algerian raï music with Western flavors, often performed in Arabic. In 2008, Taha won the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Middle East & North Africa. His latest album The Definitive Collection (2007) features Taha’s greatest hits, including “Ya Rayah,” “Nokta” and an Arabic version of The Clash’s classic “Rock The Casbah.”
Kimmel Center Presents brings a welcoming respite from the dog days of summer starting Thursday, July 10, 2008 when the popular world music dance parties return with weekly Global Grooves shows in Perelman Theater. Global Grooves series showcases a hot lineup of international bands in the Perelman Theater, which is transformed into a nightclub with an open dance floor and cash bar. Guests experience the exotic beats of foreign locales while dancing to music of hard-edged Algerian raï to the funky good times of a James Brown tribute.
We need to get an accurate head-count for the Kimmel Center, so we wont be able to accommodate walkins at this event. Please sign up and pay via Paypal or personal check early, so that we can purchase group tickets.
